Mission Reports: Broken C-Clip
Thursday evening a team from Colorado 4×4 Rescue and Recovery went in on Slaughterhouse Gulch to assist a Jeep with a broken C-Clip. The rear axle had begun walking itself out of the axle.
It took a bit of coercion to get back into the axle tube as the brakes didn’t want to cooperate with the drum, but once everything was back in place, a 4×4 and ratchet straps were used to hold everything in while it was limped off the trail.
This is a pretty common issue with C-Clip rear ends running oversized tires. If you find yourself in this situation, a tree branch, hi-lift jack handle, or even a small pipe (if you happen to have one) can be used to hold everything together while driving out. Just takes a few straps or some wire to the bumper or frame. Obviously you need a tow truck or trailer once at the trail head as there is no way to go highway speed with a makeshift device holding your axle together.
